And all this thanks to the locals who answered in a referendum about the creation of a large ski resort with a clear NO. Instead, a different, new approach was taken, leading to the award as biosphere park by the UNESCO.

This was the beginning of “gentle“ tourism, proving today that farming, fauna and flora, nature and tourism can work together.

The world of gentle mountains reaches no more than a maximum of 2,400 altitude metres, making some of the more difficult activities easier. Delightful hiking tours or mountain bike tours lead into the mountains of the Turracher Höhe, Falkert, Hochrindl and Innerkrems. The precious natural and cultural landscape can be explored and discovered together with rangers of the biosphere park.

The winter landscape is a snow-white natural idyll. In the Nock Mountains, not only alpine winter sports are on the agenda in the skiing areas of Turracher Höhe, Hochrindl, Innerkrems, in Heidi Alm Ski Park or Bad Kleinkirchheim. The lakes turn into romantic ice rinks and ski touring routes, winter hiking trails and a vast network of cross-country ski tracks provide variety on a ”gentle“ winter holiday.

Wonderfully soothing thermal spas or the unique treasure house of nature with heavy crystal giants are recommended as bad weather programme.
