St. Margarethen is surrounded by the mountain world of the Lungau. Challenging hiking routes await in the Lower Tauern to the north and excursion tours ideal especially for families are waiting in the gentle landscape of the Nockberg Mountains in the south. The famous Mur Cycle Track leads directly through St. Margarethen. The quaint hut is located directly at the Katschberg. The hut is situated in a quiet location far away from noise and road traffic.
The hut is around 100 years old and meets all expectations for a rustic hut holiday: an open fire for romantic atmosphere under a star-studded sky, a covered terrace with great view to the surrounding mountains, a well to keep drinks cold and a brick-built BBQ.
In 1,600 m above sea level, it gets cold quickly in the evening. The original wood-fired stove in the kitchen is quite handy and brings warmth to the entire hut in no time. Just like in the olden days there is an open fire in the entrance area of the hut. That is the reason why the old walls on the ground floor are sooty black. The stairs to the first floor are creaky and steep and seem to have their own character. The sleeping area is mainly equipped with bunk beds made from proper wood. Adults will feel like kids again when climbing the beds and the children have fun anyway with pillow fights and scary stories. The “chosen ones” or anyone who is in special need of relaxing sleep will enjoy the 2-bed room with four-poster beds.
Very handy is the adjacent serviced “Bonner Hut“. Here you can enjoy local dishes because not everyone likes to cook on their holiday. The Lungau is known as Austria’s sunniest region. The diverse alpine landscape at the Katschberg between Carinthia and Salzburg, surrounded by the Hohe Tauern National Park & the Nockberg Mountains, lets every hiker’s heart beat faster.
Our tip: Best have your mountain boots at the ready when you arrive because there is a 1 ½-hours hiking route ahead of you! Don’t forget to pack candles and torch, and a sleeping bag is also recommended on a hut holiday!
