Holidays in the Salzburgerland Behind old walls and quaint beams
Salzburg’s most famous son, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, was born in January 1756. This former farmhouse was built in Abtenau, just outside the salt and cultural capital, only 24 years later. These old walls and beams have seen emperors, crowns and wars, yet they are still standing and now offer Almliesl guests a historic holiday home.
The owners have lovingly renovated the house. Creaking floorboards, sunburnt beams, old wonky stairs and low ceiling heights – the charm of bygone times can still be found in all corners of the house. But you don’t have to go without today’s important modern elements. A proper toilet, a beautiful solid wood kitchen with stove, microwave and dishwasher are available. The wood-fired stove in the kitchen, tiled stove and Danish stove radiate authentic feel-good atmosphere in this quaint house. Life for children in and around the house is just one big adventure.
The large meadow offers plenty of space for playing and having fun. A visit to the adjacent stable is also an exciting experience for children. There they can admire cows, pygmy goats, pigs, chicken and cats. Milk, eggs and farm-own honey can be purchased from the farm. The farmer is a passionate beekeeper.
The mountains and rivers in the Salzburger Land offer many more possibilities for water and fun sports in Abtenau. Rivers like the Lammer or the Salzach can be explored by kayak or raft. An canyoning expedition to the gorges is also recommended.
In winter, Abtenau is easily accessible via the motorway and the Lammertal Bundesstraße (A-Road). The Skiverbund Dachstein West provides free of charge ski bus services. You only need one ski pass to discover a total of 7 ski resorts with 142 kilometres of downhill runs and 64 lift facilities.
Our tip: Hohensalzburg Castle – Salzburg
