Pongau |

Up until this century and even now, the Pongau region has always maintained pure custom, tradition and a wealthy preserved habitat. It wasn´t until the 19th century that Pongau was made accessible by rail and motorway, allowing the holidaymaker to reach their pongauer destination faster.
The Pongau known as “the sun terrace of Salzburg” lays surrounded by limestone alps in the north and the imposing peaks of the high and low Tauern in the south. The Pongau valleys offer a fantastic setting for trekking, mountain bike tours and numerous other sportive activities.
The Gastein valley also called „the water valley“ is known for its clear streams, rivers, mystical dark lakes and rushing waterfalls. It is the ideal place for long excursions, hikes and mountain trekking-tours. The mountain pastures offer a perfect setting to enjoy mountain romantik, local custom and hospitality.
Nature, recreation and an atmosphere of comfort, peace and acceptance await you in the Grossarltal, the valley of the mountain huts. Approx. 40 catering huts, on around 250 kilometres of hiking trails, supply visitors with traditional delicacies. The individual mountain masses that take place annually at the mountain summits and huts are a unique experience for body and mind.
The Salzburg sport world at the foot of the Radstädter Tauern is equally worth a visit. The variety and diversity of leisure and sport facilities here are very hard to beat. Besides walking-, trekking-, and mountain-bike tours in all levels of difficulty, you can go climbing in high-wire-gardens, kayaking, rafting and much more. On sport free days you can visit historical sites such as the Castle Hohenwerfen and enjoy the air show of the Salzburg falconry, the world ´s largest system of ice caves in Werfen or the Castle Goldegg with its numerous cultural events program.
The Pongau also does not stint with its winter sport facilities and its warm hospitality. With over 350 kilometres of ski-slopes, its “family friendly” ski-regions such as the Grossarltal valley and the snow guarantee until the beginning of May in the high alpine region Sportgastein (1.600 – 2.700 m) the Salzburg sport world is a mark for variety, fun and adventure on vacation. |
